This artwork is a major work in progress, with changes in design and application happening by the minute.
The main idea for this artwork is going to be a huge dream catcher hanging on a stand. Instead of string in the middle of the dream catcher, in the middle that chicken I am going to have chicken wire. In the middle of that chicken wire is going to be a doily that was crocheted by my grandmother with one of her broaches. I am thinking of starching this doily so that it gives some dimension to the installation.
On the outside band of the dream catcher, I am going to be using material from an old curtain that will be stained with tea. I am thinking of hanging that same material from the bottom of the mandala to create that authentic dream catcher effect. At the bottom of the dream catcher, there will be small mandala drawings that I have created throughout the year that depicts stressful events that have happened throughout the year.
I chose the dream catcher for this project because a dreamcatcher is used to catch nightmares and bad thoughts to allow the person to sleep peacefully beneath it. My grandmother, a very spiritual person, had given me a dream catcher when I was very young that I always had above the bed. Although traditionally dream catchers are used for dreams, my dream catcher will symbolize family and how they "catch" the bad things in life in order to protect you from it. At the top (body of the dream catcher) will be a variety of elements that symbolize family and that draw inspiration from the Mexican tradition of Dia de Los Muertos, or more commonly known as the Day of the Dead. At the bottom of the dream catcher will be all of these anxiety-filled events, symbolising letting go of the bad and getting through these stressful events with the help of those around you. This year has been a very tough year for me filled with a lot of death and sorrow, and therefore I chose to create this artwork.
