Step 1
Firstly I started by using an old cake board (44inches) that we had laying around the house. I used a bread knife to cut out the center. This is what I used for the outer layer of my dream catcher.
Step 2
I then cut the repurposed curtain into strips of varying length and thickness. I placed these strips in 2 different containers. One had a coffee mixture and the other had a tea mixture. I decided to use both coffee and tea so that I could have a bit of differentiation in the colors. the coffee produced a more cool tone where the tea produced a more warm tone. After letting these strips soak for a few hours, I hung them on the washing line to dry.
Step 3
I then wrapped the dead fabric around the cake board. I used a glue gun to secure the fabric to the board making sure that I overlap each rotation. Although the wrapping is traditionally done with leather, I decided to go with the tea material so that my project has a cohesive feel. Tea is the main ingredient that I use throughout this project.
Step 4
After the wrapping has been done, I decided to fasten the chicken wire with a staple guna and a glue gun. This was just to ensure that it is sturdy and will not come loose. I did struggle with the but I think I managed to attach it pretty neatly after getting the hang of where to cut and where to fasten.
Step 5
The next step was to add in all the different elements to the inside of the dream catcher. This entails the doily in the center with the broach, the painted flowers with skull beads, the sugar skulls, and the teardrop motif. each of these was carefully fitted to the chicken wire with a glue gun to ensure they do not come loose.
Step 6
The next thing to do was add the remaining material to the bottom of the dream catcher. TO create a bit of texture I braided some of the strips. Also added in some knitting wool of different textures. I also added in fairly light to brighten up the piece. And lastly, I added in the feathers and the small drawings that I had created.
